Problem three Placement is constrained by furniture, not signal

§03Why a monitor at all, if the baby is right there?

A fair question, and worth answering rather than assuming. Several genuine reasons hold even at close range:

This is the situation where the entry-tier product is most clearly the correct answer rather than a compromise, and it’s worth stating the reasoning explicitly.

The capabilities that justify a larger, more capable unit are the ones this situation doesn’t use. A large screen exists to be legible at distance — you’re at arm’s length. Higher resolution exists to resolve detail on a bigger panel — the panel is small by choice. Longer range exists to cross a house — you’re crossing three metres. Motorised camera movement exists to change the view remotely — you can reach the camera.

Meanwhile the smaller unit’s characteristics align with what the situation actually needs: a smaller panel emits less light in a dark room, a compact body fits where surface space is contested, and lower power draw means the battery covers a night more easily. None of that is a consolation prize; it’s a better fit. The subtractive test applied to a shared-room situation returns “wouldn’t use it” on most of what the premium tier adds.

The exception worth naming: if you expect the child to move to their own room within a few months, and particularly if that room is far away or through dense walls, buying for the future arrangement can make sense even though it’s over-specified for today.
