§02The four things a feature word doesn’t specify

Bound one Trigger — what actually starts it

Any “activated” or “automatic” feature has a trigger condition, and the label rarely says what it is. Voice or sound activation implies a threshold — some level of sound below which the feature stays dormant and above which it wakes up — and that threshold is set by the manufacturer, not disclosed by the word “voice-activated” itself. The same label can describe a hair-trigger sensor that wakes on a breath, or a conservative one that only responds to a real cry.

Bound two Mechanism — what physically happens

Both are honestly “two-way talk.” They’re not the same feature to actually use.

This is the bound most likely to be misread, because an icon or indicator looks self-explanatory and usually isn’t. A device might show a specific on-screen icon whenever a feature is actively engaged — and it’s easy to assume that icon means something more familiar, like a power-saving or eco mode, when it actually indicates something narrower and more specific, like “talkback is currently active.” The indicator is accurate. The assumption about what it means is where the gap opens.

§03A real example: what an “active” icon can actually mean

Worth walking through a concrete case, because the fourth bound — the indicator — is the one buyers most often get wrong without realizing it, and it’s easiest to explain with a real instance rather than in the abstract.

The pattern, generalized

On many baby monitors, an on-screen icon lights up during specific device states — and one of the more common assumptions buyers bring to any glowing or highlighted icon is that it signals a power-saving or low-power mode, because that’s a familiar concept from other electronics.

That assumption is frequently wrong, and it’s wrong in an instructive way. §05Six questions that work on any feature claim

  • Is the interaction press-once, press-and-hold, or fully automatic? These are three different physical experiences that can share the same feature name.
  • What does the feature not do? Ask directly for the edge case — what a reasonable buyer might assume it covers that it actually doesn’t.
  • What does each on-screen icon or indicator mean, specifically? Don’t infer from a similar icon on another product — ask for this device’s actual reference.
  • Is “smart” describing genuine automation, or a manually operated setting? Ask what has to happen for the function to trigger — a person doing something, or the device sensing something on its own.
  • Can you demonstrate the feature live rather than describe it, so the actual behavior — not the label — is what you’re evaluating?
